Wisdom of Solomon

She is a spirit who loves man

The Wisdom of Solomon was directly written in Greek few decades before Jesus of Nazareth was born, by a Hebrew probably living in Alexandria who decided to put his Book under the wise King Solomon’s authority (see chapters 7-8-9). The text has the explicit belief of a life after death, a divine judgment and a reward for the righteous. «But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died. Their departure was considered affliction, and their travel away from us ruin; But they are in peace. For even if in the sight of men they are punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having borne a little chastening, they will receive great good; because God tested them, and found them worthy of himself. He tested them like gold in the furnace, and he accepted them as a whole burnt offering. In the time of their visitation they will shine. They will run back and forth like sparks among stubble. They will judge nations and have dominion over peoples. The Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust him will understand truth. The faithful will live with him in love, because grace and mercy are with his chosen ones» (Wis 3,1-9; see chapters from 1 to 5).

I invite you to read the beautiful interpretation of the salvation history in chapters from 10 to 19, which emphasizes Wisdom’s action in the events experienced by humanity and by the Hebrew people. In this report, starting from the world creation, you will recognize the story of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and especially the story of Moses with the Exodus from Egypt. «We can hardly guess the things that are on earth, and we find the things that are close at hand with labor; but who has traced out the things that are in the heavens? Who gained knowledge of your counsel, unless you gave wisdom, and sent your holy spirit from the highest? It was thus that the ways of those who are on earth were corrected, and men were taught the things that are pleasing to you. They were saved through wisdom» (Wis 9,16-18).
